2008 – TLO…Trevor Garrod-Keys, Dan Lebowitz-guitar, Steve Adams-bass, Dave Brogan-drums…A side project developed only for the 2008 Desert Rocks Music Festival in Moab, UT.  The group came together when neither Tea Leaf Green or ALO, were able to play the festival. Soon after this tragedy Desert Rocks decided to sign Dan Lebowitz as an artist at large. This got people talking and led to a break through idea by one of the Keep It Moist queens. If only one member of both bands was keeping either from playing why not sign a few members from both to create a rock n’ roll band of monstrous proportions.  The name TLO also has some interesting play behind it as the letters have several potential meanings. Trevor Liberation Orchestra, Tea Leaf Orchestra, or my personal favorite, a quote from Mr. Garrod himself “The Last Option”.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO/The Fred):  Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a US jazz group founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1994.  It has had many iterations of artists over the years and currently consists of pianist Brian Haas, drummer Josh Raymer, upright bassist Matt Hayes, and guitarist Chris Combs.  Reed Mathis a was founding member of JFJO but on January 2009 announced he was leaving to pursue other endeavors (become TLG’s full time bassist…YAY!)

Once we had a pile of songs recorded we looked at them all and there was a group of tracks within the group of songs that really jumped out at us. So we got together several times and took everything we recorded—every take of everything—and took notes. We observed ourselves several months after the fact, which is a very educational process. Then we decided to focus on the thirteen songs that ‘asked’ to be grouped together. There was no specific intention behind this record. That came after we looked at everything we recorded and saw there was an obvious group within it.   – Reed Mathis

“Picture, if you will, the combined DNA of Albert Einstein, Babtunde Olatunji, George Harrison, Jimmy Cliff, David Byrne, Billy Martin, Gil Evans, Jerry Garcia, Terrance McKenna, Bob Marley, Yoda, Roger Waters and the Scarecrow from the Land of Oz. Imagine a consciousness so quietly powerful that people who spent only a few hours around him would say years later that the experience forever changed the course of their life. Like Van Gogh, a man whose vision of the world was so vividly radiant and psychedelic … a beauty so new that anyone who looks at it is suddenly given new eyes, yet it allowed him no peace.

We all met at the epic September ’07 Blender run in NYC, but it wasn’t until we spent tons of time traveling and hanging out together on the “New Year’s Boomerang Run” that conversations about stats and documenting side projects evolved into a full blown website.  Somewhere between NY > VA > NY > MD > CT > NY, the idea of LART was born.

The concept of LART was publicly launched during the April 2008 Green Apple Festival in New York City. As a side project of our own there were some challenges along the way, but during the fall of 2009 we had finally finished entering all the historical setlists, built the blog posts with all the side project and leafer information, and a bunch of other bells and whistles. In early 2010 we were approached by TLG management to take over the administration of the long-running tlg.com forum, and we launched the LART forum on March 14th – preserving years of leafer conversations.

All of this was done over the interwebs (thank you googledocs!). We emailed, chatted online, had loooong conference calls, and saw each other in pairs at shows for the next 28 months.


It wasn’t until July 12th, 2010, on a boat sailing around Manhattan, that the three of us got to see a face-melting show together for the first time in 2 1/2 years…

The concept behind Can You Guess It? (CYGI?) is very similar to that of Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football. In these games, you pick players to form a team and you score points when the players on your team perform well in actual competition. In CYGI?, you select a team of songs that will be yours throughout an entire tour. You will pick 15 songs from 5 categories, each with different point structures and set songs to select from. When a song on your team is played live in concert and the location or type fits the category in which you placed it, then you score the point value associated with that category.

**Southern tour includes shows from August 26th to September 9th.

**Prizes will be awarded each Monday based on total points the week before (specifics TBD).

Freebies: These are songs that will more than likely be played multiple times throughout the tour. There are 3 subcategories – pick one song from each subcategory and receive 1 point each time each of those 3 songs are played throughout a tour.

Probables: These are songs that regularly show up in setlists. Pick 6 songs and receive 4 points for each song when it is played throughout a tour. **NOTE:  There will be no set designation for openers and closers.

Covers: Pick 2 songs and receive 10 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE: Covers are defined as played at least 4 times overall, and at least 2 times since 12.7.07.

Bustouts/Rarities: Pick  3 songs and receive 15 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE:  Bustouts/Rarities are defined as played 0 to 3 times in 2010.

Long shot: Pick 1 song and receive 30 points the FIRST time it is played on tour, and receive 4 points every time thereafter.  **NOTE:  Long shots are defined as not yet played or only played once since 12.7.07.

The deadline for submitting your picks for the Southern Tour  is Thursday, August 26th at 8:30PM (EST).

FAQs

• Why do some songs seem to be missing? Some songs were disqualified if they are primarily CBB songs or if they haven’t been played in over 280 shows.
• Can I change my picks in the middle of a tour? No.
• If a song I picked is only teased or jammed, do I still score points? No.
• When are scores and standings posted? Scores and standings are posted after a confirmed setlist has been added to the letsallridetogether.com database. This will usually happen within 12 hours of the completion of a show, but there is no guarantee.
• What if a song segues into a “sandwich” or “lasagna”? You still only score once for that song.
• What if a song that is started is never completed? This will be scored will be decided on a case by case basis. As a general rule of thumb, if the instance of that song is only footnoted in the setlist, then it will not score points. However, if the song itself appears in the setlist with a footnote stating that it was an incomplete version, then it will score points.
• What if a show is added to a tour after the tour starts? Any show added to the letsallridetogether.com setlist database will earn points. Promotional appearances and side projects are generally not entered in to the database.

The methodology: for every pre-2006 show, 1 point was given for every time mentioned on the forum; for 2006, 2007, and 2008 we’ve taken OnTheBus’s “Top Shows of the Year” threads, added them to the individual votes, and compiled the top 10 for each year. Some subjectivity was used (we had to balance for every time MK said “1-10-04″). We’ve only listed the top 10 so as to not overwhelm.

For the first half of 2009 we took shows from ‘A Free Cup Of Tea: Fan’s picks Vol. 1′, rolled them together with a few others and came up with a top 10. Top downloads for the last half of 2009, and the first half of 2010, hopefully coming soon.

brutha g: Although there’s no official definition of Coffee Bean Brown, there’s a general consensus as to what that is – the acoustic alter-ego of Tea Leaf Green. It has all four members of the band, and Josh plays an acoustic guitar and Ben or Reed plays acoustic bass. Trevor still keys and Scotty still drums. Sometimes this same formation known as CBB has also gone under the name Tea Leaf Green Acoustic. Still the same thing though, just two different names of the same thing. There has only been one slight deviation from this – 8/13/07 The Sweetwater -where it was billed as Coffee Bean Brown, but Josh played an electric guitar that night, so it wasn’t true, technical CBB, but very close, as Ben still used an acoustic bass, and the setlist was in true CBB fashion. That’s been the only slight deviation of CBB or TLGAcoustic. Anyone that knows anything about any of these shows, will tell you that these are the goods, a truly special blend of the Tea that only comes on rare rare occasion. A bust out of gems, classics, new songs introduced, and vintage jams done acoustically. I would fly anywhere in North America for the acoustic tea.

dgold: CBB and TLG are the same musicians, playing much the same repertoire but the general pattern is songs are debuted in CBB and then they often grow into full TLG songs. The more time goes on, the more setlist history shows how CBB, TLG, TLG Acoustic, are crossover variations of the same project that we all know and love as collectively Tea Leaf Green. It is a musical planet. They’re integrally related, this has always been obvious (since it’s the same 4 guys as the foundation), but the crossover has really increased over the years after the 2002, 2003, 2004 series of shows where CBB first made their mark and established the name of Coffee Bean Brown to mean the acoustic side-project shows by this band.

The intermingling of CBBish aspects with TLG, I think, broadens and simplifies the terminology more than it complicates it. The way it simplifies is by showing that all is one, in reality, the bands are so much the same and CBB is an alias that they might use when they want to give you an acoustic hint. But they might just-as-soon play acoustic as TLG, or drop some electric in a CBB show, without naming it anything different.

“Tea Leaf Brown” is a casual, joking fan nickname for when they bring acoustic instruments into TLG – see CBB/TLG Crossover Factors – includes the “Coffee Breaks” of fall 2009 and spring 2010.

“Acoustic, my ass” is a joking fan response for when they go heavily electric in a supposedly acoustic show – see 6.15.07 8.13.07

Coffee Bean Brown vs. TLG Acoustic: From 2005 to mid-2007 acoustic shows were billed as “Tea Leaf Green Acoustic.” From a marketing perspective it makes sense, how many unknowing peeps saw the Coffee Bean Brown billing and thought “who the hell are those guys?” They went back to the CBB moniker in mid-2007. The only exception to this is the recent ‘Looking West’ CD release party on June 16, 2010, billed as TLG Acoustic for the first set.
